About Jill Passen
Pastry Chef and Owner, Buttercream Baking Company

jill passenI am not excactly sure when I started baking. I think it was when I got my easy bake oven one year forChristmas. Baking and cooking continued to be a hobby for me until my family and I moved to Amesbury.

My kids, Max 9 and Olivia, 8 were in school full time. Since I was new to Amesbury my friends turned me onto the Newburyport Mother's Club, which I joined. There was a day I came across a posting by Michelle Hastings (previous owner and Pastry Chef of Buttercream) who was looking for some part-time help. I went and met with her at the bakery and we just immediately hit it off and part-time lead to full time.

So, this was the beginning of my professional careeer in pastries. As you can tell by the photo, (michelle on the left) we had a lot of fun. And we both have scars to prove it. I LOVED it. I was there till the end, till the day the doors closed, and then they re-opened in my home. The training and techniques I learned from Michelle will be with me forever. I still continue to take classes through the Cambridge Culinary Pastry Program. There is always something new I can learn and do better.

I asked Michelle to write a bio about me and this is what she wrote: "Jill started out a total nut with an unsettling addiction to shortening based frosting and wine. Under the careful training and strict Crisco detox program, her talents blossomed and she honed her culinary skills. She is still completely nuts, still loves wine, but she's seen the light on the frosting front. She has grown to become a talented, creative chef with a true passion for food. She absolutely loves making the treats that make your special events memorable. Oh...and her chocolate chip cookies are out of this world."

Michelle to this day can not recreate my chocolate chip cookie recipe! Must have been something I learned from my easy bake oven!
